The headline sounds like a rock band, and at Ball High, Ms. Rose Charles is a rock star!
The most important people always work behind the scenes. This is especially true for Ball High School. Miss Rose Charles has been the Sub Coordinator here at Ball High School for close to three decades and without her expertise and dedicated efforts our school would crumble, and our poor teachers would be left helpless and hapless.
Rose Charles has many titles. She’s mother to Ronisha, Dendrick, and Michael Jr. and wife to Michael Charles Sr. for over 42 years. Ms. Charles began her professional career working at UTMB for years until she lost interest and longed for a fulfilling vocation. That´s when she decided to volunteer with handicapped kids though a program at GISD. While she was volunteering, her children attended Ball High.
As an involved parent she found herself constantly at school. She took it as a sign and started working at Central Middle School as a secretary under the venerable Charles Brooks, after some time they both transferred to Ball High School. Brooks later retired while Ms. Charles continued to work as a secretary for the next three years.
After her years as a secretary, Ms. Charles decided to become the sub-coordinator here at Ball, but her responsibilities cover so much more than only the substitute teachers. Ms. Charles makes certain that every person gets paid for the exact number of hours worked. She also makes sure the school has the correct number of subs. Lastly, she manages who goes where.
Ms. Charles admits it can be difficult finding subs who will simply watch the class, take attendance, make sure the teacher’s plans are followed, and humbly call for an AP when a student misbehaves. Most substitute teachers let the teacher part get to their head disciplining students or even attempting to teach a lesson. That’s why Ms. Charles makes sure she always has the same cluster of subs she can depend on.
While Ms. Charles’ job may seem clear cut, some teachers still find a way to make it difficult. Instead of summitting their request for time off to Ms. Charles some teachers would rather find a fill-in or a colleague to watch their classes and for that reason, Ms. Charles makes it a point to never stay in the same place too long.
Every day, she constantly walks around the school taking note of who is in class and who had a sub assigned for the day, but most importantly her walks are always successful in catching those sneaky teachers who think they can slip away without anyone noticing.
For all its worth, Rose Charles loves her job and plans to keep clocking into work for as long as God lets her!
