Ms. Tamara Anderson attended the University of Texas where she joined their drill team. She started dance lessons to help pay for her college tuition. “Dancing makes my soul happy,” Anderson smiled. “I have always loved to entertain, and I love music and the theater. Not a lot different than in art, expression and emotion is in all.”
Six years ago, Anderson was diagnosed with cancer and suffered a stroke. Her doctor suggested she continued doing what she loved, which was dancing. She was unable to find a regular dance class, so she decided to join a belly dancing class and loved it. “Belly dancing is a way to express yourself thru movement and costuming.”
Her friend then introduced her to the belly dancing troupe Asylum. “Asylum has around 30 women ages ranging from 20 to late 70s,” Anderson said. They are performing soon at the steampunk festival at the railroad museum right here in Galveston!
“I am at a stage in my life where I am trying new things,” Anderson said. “I am taking up surfing and started Djembe drumming with a Djembe troupe two years ago. Whatever I do, whether it’s in art, dance or music I try to do with passion.”
