On the 4th of September, a mother received a text message from her son that would forever change her, and many others, lives.
On a normal Wednesday like any other, at least it was supposed to be, Marcee Gray opened her phone to a message from her son. “I’m sorry, mom” was enough to let Marcee know something was extremely wrong.
Around 9:50 a.m. Marcee called Apalachee High School telling them there was an “extreme emergency” and asked them to immediately locate and check up on her son, 14-year-old Colt Gray. About 30 minutes later Colt had been apprehended for killing four and injuring nine with AR-15-style rifle his father bought him, as a Christmas present of course. In the following days on September 6th there was another school shooting and on September 7th there were three more school shootings, just before that there had already been over 40 school shootings shootings in the U.S. as of 2024 alone.
When will it stop? Will kids ever be able to go to school without the thought of a shooter in the back of their head? Maybe a bullet there instead?
Kamala Harris has spoken on preventing these kinds of things, she even went off script during a rally in New Hampshire to address the Apalachee shooting. She said, “They are sitting in a classroom where they should be fulfilling their God-given potential, yet some part of their big, beautiful minds is worried about a shooter breaking through the door,” she continued. “It doesn’t have to be this way.” I want to specifically mention the Red Flag Law, also known as the Extreme Risk Protection Order law, which prevents people who show signs of being a risk to themselves or others from purchasing a firearm.
Harris has stated that these red flag laws are an important tool in getting these people help “before tragedy occurs” and even backed California lawmakers’ efforts to pass one, making California one of the earliest states to have such a policy. Harris also advocates for background checks, because she does not want to take away our 2nd amendment; she only wants us to be safer with it. She has even stated that she and her running mate Tim Walz are in fact gun owners. This is why I think you should get up and go register to vote Kamala Harris for President.
