As we continue our time travel through the 21st century, medicine continues to amaze and surprise the world with their latest discoveries.
Earlier this year in July, researchers at UTMB made a groundbreaking discovery with a nasal spray. Studies over at the university have shown that this innovation helps in reducing the unwanted tau protein that can build up in the brain and cause damage for those with neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s or dementia.
Scientists conducted experiments on mice that held these diseases, focusing their attention on improving their cognitive function, which it did. “This nasal spray approach opens new avenues for non-invasive delivery of tau therapeutic antibodies directly to the brain, and it holds promise for many neurodegenerative diseases,” said the head researcher of this study at UTMB, Dr. Rakez Kayed.
Kayed and his team will continue these experiments and treatments, but plan to perform human clinical trials instead to further advance their research and in hopes of developing it into an actual product that will help those with these conditions.
