Hispanic dance is a vibrant and significant way of presenting Ball High School here in Galveston. Ms. Anna Olivares has been directing and teaching the dance team for over 20 years. With each new group and even with older members these dances become more passionate and bolder. Ms. Anna Olivares is someone who a lot of people come to for anything. She has worked hard over the years to expose the Mexican Heritage to everybody. Ms. Olivares isn’t just about dance, she’s also about education and making sure her students have discipline, manners, respect and are on task.
Students that decide to enter this group should know that Ms. Olivares will check up on them about their classes and any other activities that they are in. Being in Hispanic Dance takes a lot of dedication, time, patience, and partnership. If no one agrees or gets along with each other then it causes problems for the team. Olivares is big on making sure all her dance members get along because it’s not just a team, it’s a family. Being a family and trusting is one of the biggest and most important part about being in Hispanic dance especially if everyone is going to have to work with each other.
Previous members of the team still have good things to say about the team and Ms. Olivares. One previous member named Miranda Partida stated that “It’s always been about family and cherishing the bonds and memories you make”. Ms. Olivares is always big on making all her members feel a part of the team and letting them know they are not alone, which she doesn’t get enough credit for. Olivares deserves more respect and opportunities to do more activities for the group. She fights for the team and tries to get around just to have trips ready for the team.
The Hispanic Dance team dances to more than just the traditional dances they dance Bachata, Cumbia, Merengue, etc. Some people find some of the dance moves in these dances to either be inappropriate or provocative when those moves are a part of the cultural dances. Hispanic dance doesn’t get the credit for being creative or more passionate than any other dance group. In other words, Being in Hispanic Dance gives you lots of opportunity to meet new people and become friends to family being in a group like that makes you feel close with everyone. This dance team isn’t just any dance team, they work together, talk things out, and treat each other like family.
