The Ball High Theater Arts Department, under the direction of Bill Nealon, performed the high school musical Hairspray for its All-District play on November 21-23.
The musical, based on the New Line Cinema film written and directed by John Waters, casts GISD students of all ages in the show.
Ms. Chesney Garza created the dazzling choreography for the play and Musical Director Larrian Menifee integrated music to enhance the story and heighten the drama.
Assistant choreographers and Dance Captains Bella Ortiz-Elmore and Ava Farmer added their expertise to the production while Jennifer Daughtery designed the costumes and Gavin Santos ably performed as the Assistant Set Designer and Builder.
Audrey Conner, Grayson Daugherty, Jaiden Scribner, Landon Pendergrass, Layla Gonzales, Macayla Boas and Rayna Buzbee performed in the featured chorus, and Annie Conley, Bear Milling, Emmeline Beasley, Charlotte Cook, Antonio Thomas, Zachary Bradley, Starrletta Short and Ash Penlington were members of the technical crew.
According to Ross Raihala of Pioneer Press, “Tony Award-winning Hairspray continues to be one of the most widely produced musicals today, not only because of its wit and charm, but also because of the beautiful message of acceptance and progress that it portrays. The bright, energetic story of Tracy Turnblad teaches us all to look past the color of one’s skin and fight for every human being’s equal rights.”
