The 2024 FIDE world championship is the first in over 130 years that has two contestants from Asia. The contestants are 32-year-old Ding Liren, China grandmaster since 2009, youngest ever chess champion at the age of 16 and, 18-year-old Gukesh Dommaraju from Chennai, India, youngest ever world championship contender and, 3rd youngest grandmaster. Singapore is the host country for the FIDE world championship that started November 25th and s set to end December 12th but if there is a tie-break needed it will end December 13th. There have already been 9 out of the 14 games and Dommaraju leads 6-5.
This is only the second championship hosted in southeast Asia after it was hosted in Baguio in the Philippines. Google sponsored the event, one of the first times a global technology company has partnered with FIDE.
The competition consisted of many series of chess with each game becoming more critical. Each player showed off their skill to not only each other but the rest of the world that was or still is watching them. With both being extremely talented, they would both have to always be more concentrated and ready.
The 2024 FIDE chess championship will continue to be an exciting yet intense game. With the two of the world’s top players competing for the highest rank in chess, people who are fans of either them or chess are in for a treat. Even if you don’t watch chess, this championship is something big and you wouldn’t want to miss any of it. Only three games remain to be played.
