To the surprise of many who support Trump’s deportation program, sheriffs around the nation refuse to participate in the mass deportation campaign instrumental to Donald Trump’s reelection.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, “I am grateful to the ICE personnel for their candor and openness in our discussions about their critical law enforcement mission. The new guideline will enable our Deportment to accomplish our law enforcement mission most effectively and, at the same time, advance our country’s well-being by recognizing the invaluable contributions of millions of individuals who are part of the fabric of our communities. The guidelines will help us exercise our prosecutorial discretion to achieve justice.
Yuma County Sheriff Leon Wilmot voiced his concerns about the deportation process. Wilmot stated, “We didn’t get into the intricacies of it because that’s not our realm of responsibility. If we wanted to do immigration law, we would go work for Border Patrol,” Wilmot stated.
While arguments rage about immigration policy and goals, it is important not to force people to volunteer their services in areas that are not their responsibility, or expertise at least legally … the moral aspects of this effort continue to divide the nation.
If America is willing to drag so many law-abiding people out of their homes and out of the country, the government needs to be able to recruit citizens willing to do this task.
