
The Ball High freshman tennis team battled in a competitive 6A tournament last week. Claire La won second place in A girls’ singles and the girls’ doubles team of Ruby Loomis and Piper Varela also pulled out a second-place finish.
On Friday, the varsity brought home more main drawn medals from the Pasadena tournament than we have in the past.
Shawn Han and Thuc Ngo overcame slow starts. Down 3-7 in their first match and 2-7 in the second round, the team rallied, winning both matches in a set to eight. The A boys double duo ended with third place. Chloe Chase and Sophie Kirschner won 3rd place in girls doubles, finishing their tie-breaker match in the dark.
Matthew Leyva had the most impressive day. He didn’t drop a set until his second in finals and won second place in A boy’s singles.
The JV team traveled to Columbia HS on Monday and brought back a nice haul of medals: Justin Antonio and Elijah Reynolds earned 1st place in A boys doubles; Ben Crossno and Noah Catanzaro 1st in B boys doubles; Nicolas Gonzalez won 3rd in A boys singles; Lawson Rees and James Venzant won consolation in the A bracket; Kai Spence and Avery Moore 1st in A girls doubles; Nini Montano 1st in A girls singles; Clara Douglas and Abby Reyes 2nd in B doubles and Edwin Rodriguez and Victoria Miranda 3rd in mixed doubles.
