What an age we live in right now! Three scientists from Caltech have created a new form of matter called PAM’s. This matter isn’t liquid or solid, instead it’s called polycatenated architected materials or PAMs, made of collections of interconnected links, kind of like chain mail.
According to Chiara Daraio “Neither granular nor crystalline, it can be either fluid or solid depending on the stress that is applied to it. Made with 3D printing, these structures offer a new way of rethinking traditional designs and creating objects with surprising physical properties.”
Architected materials derive their properties from the geometric arrangement of their internal structural elements. “PAMs are really a new type of matter”. PAM’s also look very fun to play with and can be molded into almost anything. If PAM’s is placed under stress or pressure, it behaves like a liquid.
Overall, this invention marks a great start in the quantum level of scientific study. In the future, this incredible discovery promises a plethora of practical applications in architecture and design.
