The Tors advanced Matthew Leyva, Shawn Han/Thuc Ngo, and Chloe Chase/Sophie Kirschner. All will be competing in Regionals for the first time. This is most players Ball has advanced in recent memory. Claire Jobe won 3rd place and will be an alternate for girls’ singles.
Matthew Leyva went down on the court with cramps at the end of the first set up 5-1. He fought through the pain to finish the playback match and secure his spot in regionals.
Shawn Han and Thuc Ngo had a very strong spring season leading up to districts. After beating an Angleton team on Friday in straight sets, they advanced to regionals after a Friendswood medical default in a playback.
Chloe Chase and Sophie Kirschner gutted out a thrilling three set match for their regional spot. Chloe had stomach cramps and nausea that nearly caused her to withdraw. Instead, she and Sophie battled back after losing the first set to win the final two.
“We’re so proud of our kids and all the work they’ve put in over the last several years. It’s nice to see all the hard work pay off,” said Head Coach Kyle Fisher.
Regionals will take place at A&M Consolidated High School in College Station May 8-9.
