The Texas High School Coastal Monitoring Project started as a partnership between Ball High teacher Dr. Daniel Hochman and the UT-Austin Geology Department (Tiffany Caudle).
“It began with Ball High 20+ years ago and now includes nine high schools along the Texas coast. The data we collect is real data used in an annual report that goes to the GLO for beach management. We go three times per year to collect data (October, January, April).
THSCMP is a research and outreach project that engages students living on the Texas coast in the study of the dynamic coastal environment. Bureau scientists work with middle and high school students and teachers, showing them how to measure topography, map vegetation lines and shorelines using GPS, and observe weather and wave conditions.
“The students are active participants in the research project, which has the dual benefit of enhancing their science education and while providing their coastal communities with valuable data on their changing shoreline,” according to their website.
