The Tor baseball team (1-8) (6-15-1) , attempting to battle their way out of the District 20-5A basement, took on the first place Alvin Iowa Colony Pioneers (8-2) (19-7) Tuesday night at Bo Quiroga Field, and while our hometown heroes came out on the short end of the 6-3 score, the Tors hinted at their potential by slugging a few mighty blasts that bounced off the left and right field fences and turning one of the prettiest 6-4-3 double plays to kill a bases loaded rally by the Pioneers to keep the Tors within striking distance.
Right-hander Josiah Blackburn started for the Tors and did a good job through five innings, giving up three runs and keeping the game close. Iowa Colony’s Landon Brown, committed to Mississippi State, pitched a gem of a game for the Pioneers, holding the Tors to one run through five innings of work.
The Little Leaguers who celebrated their seasons on Bo Quiroga Field with their families before the game began cheered on Cannon Chase when he blasted a 3-2 offering off the right field wall to drive in a run as the Tors rallied in the bottom of the seventh and pushed a couple runs across the plate to draw within striking distance of the Pioneers, but the tying run at the plate struck out to end the game.
Corieon Sanders continued hammering the ball for the Tors and Danny Thomas showed great promise in his relief stint to close out the game.
The Tors played great baseball but came up short against the number one team in their district. The season continues Friday when the Tors take on the La Porte Bulldogs, game time 7 p.m.
