The Texas phone ban in classrooms took effect on August 11th. Critics argued that such a ban impacts our personal freedoms and emergency communication, while others agree it improves our safety and focus.
Supporters of this ban argued that phones are distractions and have decreased social interaction and fostered engagement; some argued that it improves our safety in school, eliminating cyberbullying, threats, and decreasing cheating. Texas State Senator Mark Reynolds stated, “Cell phones are a big distraction in the classroom.”
One key benefit of the cell phone ban is public safety. When people are less distracted by their devices, they are more likely to be aware of their surroundings. This prevents accidents and improves our safety.
People against the phone ban argue that phones are essential learning tools, helping access to educational apps. They believe phones teach responsibility and digital literacy, that prepares students for a tech-driven world. These supporters also feel like it affects the student’s personal freedom, and their ability to connect with family, especially in emergencies. If that’s the case, then how in the world did all the previous generations succeed without cell phones?
The ban has been in effect for six months and in my estimation, it works! I’ve witnessed students stay on task and there’s less interruptions during class, plus no arguments from students about using a phone during class. We often complain about our state representatives, but I believe this time they got it right!
