Since the return of President Donald Trump to the White House in January 2025, many of the leaders of countries around the world have presented Trump with expensive gifts to win his favor. While it’s expected that the powerful and rich would try and welcome any new president, the number of absurd gifts and favors the returning president has received borders on the insane. It seems we’re entering the golden age of sycophants (brown-nosing).
From gold plaques to a $400,000,000 jet from Qatar, Trump’s gift collection just keeps growing. Many of the gifts have attracted media attention because of their extravagance or symbolism. The blatant curiosity of the public about what the gifts are forces them to ask the unspoken question: why?
Senator Brian Schatz’s stated his opinion about Qatar’s gift to the entire Senate. “This is the most blatant, obvious, ridiculous, gross corruption that I’ve ever seen in my entire life. By dollar amount, by symbolism, by violating constitutional and statutory law.”
Lynda McAdams, a third-party supporter, shared her opinions. “This isn’t a Trump thing. Ever since forever, political figures have been bribing other political figures with expensive gifts or promises. It’s almost always for a bigger thing or gain for themselves.”
Some may use this argument to justify that this is just another part of the presidential experience, that these gifts are not our highest priority, and this is true, to a point. Why focus on some expensive gifts when there are wars and foreign policies to worry about?
The true answer is that there’s almost always a bigger gain to any gift, a quid pro quo. If there’s anything we’ve learned from politicians, from events today and occurrences in the past, no gift is given for free.
