In August 2025 President Donald Trump influenced the Texas Legislature to pass the new congressional maps. The goal of the new maps is expected to create up to five more Republican- leaning seats in the U.S. House. This aims to protect the party’s narrow majority in the 2026 midterm election.
The reason this is such a big deal is because congressional maps are supposed to be voted for every ten years in 2030, but President Trump is “gerrymandering” Texas so there are more Republicans to vote for him again. In other words, Trump is trying to dilute the Democratic votes to assure Republican victories in the new congressional districts.
According to President Trump, “We are entitled to five more seats,” referring to the new congressional maps to help him get reelected. Greg Abbott said that the new maps would ensure “fairer representation in the United States Congress” Also Governor Abbott referred to the new maps as, “the One Big Beautiful Map”. To no surprise the name is favored by Trump.
California Governor Gavin Newsom publicly expressed his condemnation of Texas’ Republican-led redistricting efforts. “We are responding to what occurred in Texas.” said Governor Newsom. “We’re neutralizing what occurred, and we’re giving the American people a fair chance, because when all things are equal, we’re equal.”
In retribution for this unethical action on the part of the Texas legislature, California and New York plan to redistrict their states’ congressional districts to offset the added seats that Texas gerrymandered.
