As of June 2025, Texas legislators and Governor Greg Abbott enacted a law to ban phones in all schools across the state. This law affects the grades Pre-K to twelfth grade. It isn´t surprising that when controversial laws like these are set in place, it causes an uproar and a divide between opinions. There are many pros and many cons regarding this ban, but nonetheless this law brings many issues to the students (as well as the teachers) who have slowly learned to utilize phones and personal computers and tablets into their daily lessons and school lives.
For example, the year prior, many students used their phones to turn in their class work and used their phones when they needed to take pictures for their assignments, because otherwise they don´t have the time to do it after school. However, since the phone law was implemented, they can no longer use their phones during class – not even lunch.
Another student, who chose to remain anonymous stated, ´´I think it´s unnecessary, students need their phones.” Many people don´t think that phones should have been banned but instead adjusted so students wouldn´t be able to use them during class excessively.
There are many ways that phones could be implicated in our school life without there being a hassle on whether students are truly students using them for learning purposes, not often cheating their way through school. As the months go on, I think that people should take into consideration that alongside the bad things that come with phones being allowed in schools, there are, in turn, good things as well.
