As of January 28th, 2026, 56 days until Major League Baseball’s opening day. Across the country general managers and owners have worked to prepare their teams for the upcoming baseball season, including maneuvers that happen behind closed doors that fans don’t see, like trades and deals and signing options. Baseball trading has existed since 1885 and it is a big part of building teams over the long stretch of the season, 162 games in six months.
What is baseball trading exactly? This trade is the exchange of players between teams that is administered by the general managers to improve the team roster. During the trade, negotiations are discussed about the players’ performance, contracts and future potential.
On the players’ side, they can influence their own trades through their No-Trade clauses if they are fortunate enough to have one. This contract gives the players the power and opportunity to veto trades, preventing their team from trading a player without the player’s consent, After the trade is finalized, the players face immediate relocation with their family soon after they report to their new team within a day or two.
With the season being less than two months away, major trades and signings have been executed by teams in both leagues, Starting off the 26’ trading season the Astros gained a new pitcher on January 1, 2026 Tatsuya Imai. Imai pitched for the Saitama Seibu Lions of the Nippon Professional Baseball (The highest level of Japan’s professional baseball), Imai’s record with the lions puts him ahead with a 3.15 ERA with 907 strikeouts, during his time in the NPB Imai’s powerful fast ball, and distinguished slider set the lions strikeout record in 2025.
The next signing on January 11,2026 found former Astro Alex Bregman sign a five-year $175-million contract with the Chicago Cubs, Bregman had an eventful season, before Bregman signed with the Cubs, Bregman signed a three-year $120-million contract with the Red Sox’s back on February 15, 2025, with an opt-out option, which Bregman utilized.
Bregman, drafted by the Houston Astros on July 2015, debuted with the Astros on July 25, 2016/ During his years with the Astros Bregman won two World Series (2017 and 2022), earned an All-Star MVP award (2018) for hitting the green light two run homerun in the 10th inning breaking the tie between the American league vs the National League (8-6), and those are only two of the many awards in his career. Bregman is exactly the type of players general managers scour the league to sign.
Among the teams Bregman has played for he has always left a positive presence with the team and coaches, “If he has something, he’s going to go right to you and give it to you. And whether it’s something with his swing or if we’re talking about somebody else’s approach or swing or matchup-related stuff, he’s ready to engage in the conversation immediately” Pete Fatse the Red Sox hitting coach said in an interview, Bergmans’s teammates also feel the passion in Bregman’s playing “Everyone understands Bregman’s process is just to win that game and he’ll do whatever it takes that day or night to win” Red Sox’s outfielder Rob Refsnyder said.
The last big signing in the 2026 season was a heartbreaking one, many fans felt betrayed when they heard the announcement that The Los Angeles Dodgers agreed on a four-year $240 Million deal with the “King Tuck” Kyle Tucker, Jed Hoyer the Chicago Cubs president expressed his gratefulness for Kyle “Kyle had an interesting season with us. He showed the superstar that he is in the first half and really helped carry our offense in the first half. Obviously, in the second half, he struggled a bit. But he’s a star, and he got paid like a star.
I’m happy for him. He’s going to a place where he obviously can win. It makes me happy that we were a good platform for him to have a good year and to play in the postseason and to get paid. So, I’m happy for him.”
Tucker came to the Cubs are had an excellent start to the season with 17 homeruns, 56 RBIs and batted a .499, Then in the second half of the season he barely squeezed by with six doubles and five homeruns his RBI also dropped down to 17 this was later causes by a right hand fracture and a left calf strain, besides his faults and injuries.
Tucker appears excited to be playing with the Dodgers “This organization from top down is first class,” Tucker said. “It’ll be a lot of fun competing with these guys and competing for another hopefully three-peat here.” The Dodgers president Andrew Friedman commented about having Tucker on the Dodgers “There’s an inner fire that I’ve seen,” Friedman said “”He’s a five-tool player, he loves to compete, he loves to play the game, he pours into the community, he’s a smart player.”.
Though it is upsetting for teams to lose such valuable players, every coach and staff understand the importance of the game to these players and as fans see these coaches leave zero bad blood with their former players’ departures.
