If you were to causally stroll the streets of Manhattan, you might accidently stumble upon the oldest and largest excavated burial ground in North America for enslaved and freed Africans. It serves as to honor and stand as a reminder of the history and hardships lived through in New York City.
Discovered a mere 34 years ago, in 1991 construction workers and archeologists accidentally came across 15,000 intact skeletal remains while working on the construction of the Ted Weiss Federal Building. Located 30 feet below street level, the Burial Grounded dated to 1630s to 1795, giving it the title of the oldest and biggest African Burial ground to be rediscovered in America.
Now stands a breathtaking monument, standing high for everyone to see and having a full look into the past. Everyone is welcome to go and learn about the impact this burial site has on opening the window to the African American history in New York.
