The world of MLB said goodbye to yet another amazing player. Ryan Pressley, a former pitcher for the Minnesota Twins (2012), Houston Astros (2018), and The Chicago Cubs (2025) announced his retirement on Saturday, January 17, 2026, ending his 13 years with the MLB.
Pressley concluded his career as two-time winning All-Star (2019,2021), a 2022 World Series champion and finished with 117 saves and a 3.33 ERA among the 667 relief appearances with the Twins, Astros and Cubs. Along with announcing his retirement, Pressley put out a statement.
“20,346 is a number I will cherish forever. The Minnesota Twins allowed me to become just the 20,346th person to ever compete in a major-league uniform, something I will never take for granted. Thank you.” Pressley said “Being traded to the Houston Astros felt like a Homecoming. Hoisting that World Series trophy in 2022, that’s something I always dreamed of. I’ll carry that joy forever. Houston, you’ve got our hearts — it’s our forever home now. Thank you. “And to the Cubs for giving me a chance to pitch for such an iconic franchise. Wrigley Field, those North Side fans … unforgettable. Thank you.”
Pressley thanked each person and team who brought him up into the person he is today, though he ends his statement by bringing light to his yearnings “I’ll miss the banter in the ‘pen, the inside jokes that kept us loose on those high-leverage nights.”
Though this is the close of Pressley’s chapter as a player, it’s not the end of his days in the MLB. A mere 48 hours after Pressley announced his retirement, Pressley accepted a new role one that would be on the sidelines of the game. The Minnesota Twins hired Pressley as a player development coach for both the major and minor league players, as fans we can only hope for the best for his new chapter and role on the side.
