The sky cracked open with roaring flames, swallowing the city in a blazing nightmare. Firefighters scrambled, but the hydrants sputtered dry – Los Angles was running out of water, and the inferno destroyed everything in its path. In a city built on dreams, the nightmare had just begun. On Tuesday morning the smell of fire awaked the city of Los Angles. Firefighters had sprung on the scene. When opening the hydrants connect water flow, a diminishing flow came out. By three a.m. on Wednesday all the water tanks had run dry.
After five years of drought and unsustainable water use, Iran is moving toward what they are calling “Water bankruptcy”. Farmers have taken the streets in protest of water mismanagement. Conflict like the current war in Iran can worsen the water challenges, not nationally, but across the region. The looming specter of a future where water, not flames, would be the ultimate weapon.
