In August 2023, India became the fourth nation to land on the moon, following the United States, China, and Russia. Pragyan, a lunar mission from the Indian Space Research Organization, sent images from space back to Earth after exploring the area.
Vikram, the first spacecraft to land in the south polar region of the moon, performed a variety of experiments such as finding the temperature of the lunar regolith top layer, and analyzing chemical composition which resulted in finding sulfur in lunar dust.
“Efforts to establish communication with the Vikram lander and Pragyaan rover will continue,” said ISRO on the social media platform, X.
On September 2nd, 2023, the Pragyan rover temporarily retired after all parts were turned off. Vikram followed shortly after, two days later.
Prime Minister Modi claims the landing was “a victory cry of a new India.” after millions of people cheered and were filled with national pride as they watched the success of the mission’s landing.
